THC vs. CBD: What’s the Difference?

Writer's picture: Dryden DispensaryDryden Dispensary

The world of cannabis is full of terms and acronyms that even seasoned enthusiasts might not fully understand. Among the most common are THC and CBD. What sets these two apart? And what makes them similar?

Both compounds come from the cannabis plant but play distinct roles in the body and offer unique benefits.

At Dryden, we’re all about making cannabis approachable and fun, so you can explore and find what works best for you. In this post, we’ll break down THC vs. CBD: the differences, effects, and benefits of both THC and CBD to help you decide.

What is THC?

THC Definition and Chemical Structure

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychoactive compound in cannabis responsible for the "high" sensation that many of us associate with marijuana. It interacts with the brain's endocannabinoid system, primarily binding to CB1 receptors which are mostly found in the central nervous system. This interaction alters neurotransmitter release, leading to changes in mood, perception, and cognition.

Effects of THC

No two people will experience THC in the exact same way. For the most part though, a person can expect to feel these effects from THC:

  • A euphoric "high" that many find uplifting and enjoyable

  • Enhanced relaxation, creativity, and sensory experiences

  • Potential stress reduction and improved mood

That said, THC isn’t for everyone. Some people might feel side effects like paranoia, dry mouth, or increased heart rate. If THC doesn’t vibe with you, don’t worry—CBD might be the alternative you’re looking for. Our Dryden budtenders are here to help guide you!

THC Legal Status

THC's legality varies by country and state. In New York (where we're located), recreational cannabis is legal for adults 21 and over, making it easier to access high-quality THC products at dispensaries like Dryden.

Popular THC Products

There are tons of different ways to consume THC. Certain forms have more of an immediate effect while others can be more delayed. It can be fun to explore which methods are most enjoyable for you.

  • Edibles: Gummies, chocolates, and other food items infused with THC.

  • Vaporizers: Devices that heat cannabis oil or flower to produce inhalable vapor.

  • Concentrates: Highly potent forms of THC, such as wax, shatter, or resin.

  • Beverages: THC-infused drinks like teas, sodas, and sparkling waters.

What is CBD?

CBD Definition and Chemical Structure

CBD (cannabidiol) is a non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis. Unlike THC, it doesn’t produce a "high" and primarily interacts with CB2 receptors in the body’s endocannabinoid system—which are mostly found in your peripheral nervous system, especially immune cells. These receptors are linked to inflammation and immune response.

Effects of CBD

One of the things that surprises people most about CBD when they first try it is its deeply calming effects without the high. For many people, here’s what CBD brings:

  • Calming and anti-inflammatory properties

  • A decrease in anxiety, chronic pain, and symptoms of conditions like epilepsy

  • Better sleep and less insomnia

  • Better muscle recovery and reduced soreness after physical activity

When we say calm, we mean in both the mind and body. CBD is generally well-tolerated and a great alternative to THC for people who are looking to skip that high feeling.

CBD derived from hemp (containing less than 0.3% THC) is federally legal in the United States, and New York is no exception. In fact, Dryden offers a variety of CBD products that anyone over the age of 21 can enjoy.

Popular CBD Products

  • Oils and Tinctures: Quick absorption under the tongue

  • Topicals: Creams and lotions for localized relief

  • Capsules and Edibles: Convenient and easy dosing

  • Beverages: Ever heard of CBD-infused cocktails?

  • Vaporizers: Inhale CBD oil for fast-acting effects

Key Differences Between THC and CBD

Now that you’re more familiar with what THC and CBD are, let’s explore the key differences.

Psychoactive Effects: THC vs. CBD

  • THC: Produces a "high" that can alter perception and mood.

  • CBD: Non-psychoactive, offering therapeutic effects without intoxication.

Medical Uses

  • THC: Often prescribed for nausea, chronic pain, and appetite stimulation, especially in patients undergoing chemotherapy.

  • CBD: Commonly used for anxiety, inflammation, seizure disorders, and sleep disturbances.

Shared Benefits of THC and CBD

Both compounds have therapeutic benefits and can sometimes work better together through what’s called the "entourage effect." This phenomenon suggests that when used together, THC and CBD enhance each other's effectiveness. In turn, this can create a more balanced therapeutic experience.

A 2019 study published in Frontiers in Pharmacology found that CBD can mitigate the psychoactive effects of THC, making combined use more tolerable for some patients.

When you’re browsing cannabis products containing CBD, you may encounter a ratio of CBD to THC. Here’s a quick look at how to interpret that ratio:

  • 20:1 or higher: High CBD, low THC. Often recommended for beginners or those who want to avoid THC’s psychoactive effects

  • 10:1: High CBD, medium THC

  • 5:1: Medium-high CBD, medium THC

  • 1:1: Equal amounts of CBD and THC

For some users, combining THC and CBD offers the best of both worlds. It’s all about finding something that works best for you.

Which Is Right for You? THC or CBD?

At the end of the day, choosing between CBD vs. THC (or a mixture of both) is a personal decision. If you’re looking for relaxation without intoxication, CBD might be the better choice. If you need stronger pain relief, appetite stimulation, or sleep support, THC could be more effective.

CBD can be great for daily use and staying clear-headed while enjoying therapeutic benefits. THC is better suited for relaxation, pain relief, or recreational use.

If you have underlying health conditions or are taking medications, it’s best to consult a healthcare provider before using THC or CBD.
