Live resin vs distillate: what is the difference?
Live resin keeps the flavour of the plant it came from; distillate is refined THC with flavour added back. Side by side, plus a quick quiz.
Live resin is extracted from cannabis that was frozen fresh, so it keeps more of the plant’s own flavour and aroma. Distillate is oil refined down to the cannabinoid, usually THC, with flavour added back afterwards. Both are common in carts; they differ mostly in taste and in how the oil is made.
What is live resin?
“Live” means the plant was frozen right after harvest instead of being dried and cured. Extracting it frozen holds on to more of the terpenes — the aromatic compounds behind each strain’s smell and taste — so a live resin cart tends to taste like the strain on the label.
What is distillate?
Distillate is cannabis oil refined until it is mostly one cannabinoid. Refining strips the plant’s own flavour, so terpenes are added back in. The result is consistent and usually tests high in THC.
Is live resin stronger than distillate?
Not necessarily. Distillate often shows the higher THC percentage on the label, because it is refined. Live resin is chosen more for flavour and for keeping the character of a specific strain. What THC percentage does and does not tell you is covered in what THC percentage actually means.
What about live rosin?
Live rosin starts from fresh-frozen plants too, but it is pressed out with heat and pressure instead of extracted with a solvent. It sits alongside live resin on the flavour-first side of the shelf.

Spot the difference: 3 quick questions
Question 1 of 3
Which one is made from plants frozen right after harvest?
"Live" means fresh-frozen, which keeps more of the plant's terpenes.
A cart tastes exactly like the strain on its label. Which is it more likely to be?
Live resin keeps the strain's own flavour. Distillate gets its flavour from terpenes added back.
Which one usually shows the higher THC percentage?
Distillate is refined toward THC. A higher number does not mean a better experience, though.
