New to cannabis? Start here
A calm, jargon-free walkthrough for your very first visit — what to bring, how it’s sold and how to pick something you’ll actually enjoy.
Walking into a dispensary for the first time can feel like a lot. New words, a wall of products and a worry that everyone else already knows the rules. Here’s the good news: you don’t need to know anything going in. This guide covers the basics so your first visit feels easy.
The only requirement: a 21+ ID
Dryden Dispensary is an adult-use (recreational) shop, so there’s no medical card, no membership and no paperwork. Bring a valid, unexpired government photo ID that shows you’re 21 or older — a driver’s license, state ID, passport or military ID. That’s the whole entry requirement. If you use the drive-thru, you’ll show the same ID at the window.
How it’s sold
Cannabis comes in a handful of formats, and the right one is mostly about how you like to consume — smoke, vapor or something you swallow. The quick version:
- Flower is the classic dried bud, sold by weight (an “eighth” is 3.5 grams).
- Pre-rolls are flower already rolled for you — no prep.
- Vapes are a battery plus cannabis oil, discreet and low-mess.
- Edibles are measured-dose gummies and chocolates — no smoke.
- Tinctures are drops you place under the tongue.
Want the longer version? Read flower vs. vape vs. pre-roll vs. concentrate.
Skip the strain names — shop by feel
You’ll see names like “indica,” “sativa,” and dozens of strains. They’re useful shorthand, but they’re not the most reliable way to choose. We sort our menu by the experience you’re after instead, so you can shop by feel — Sleep, Relax, Energy, Focus or Relief — without learning a single strain name. Pick the vibe that matches the evening you have in mind, and a budtender can narrow it down from there.
Start small, especially with edibles
If you’re new or coming back after a long break, less is more at the start. Edibles in particular take a while to come on, so the golden rule is start low and go slow — our full breakdown is in edibles dosing.
Just ask
Our budtenders do this all day and genuinely like helping first-timers. Tell them it’s your first visit, tell them what you’re hoping for — a mellow evening, a little energy for a hike, something to help you unwind — and they’ll point you to a few good options. There’s no wrong question here, and no judgment. Plenty of people would rather look before they walk in, and the full menu is where the current selection sits, category by category. A first purchase is a starting point rather than a commitment either way — you’ll know far more after one small session than after an hour of reading.
Cannabis is for adults 21+. Please enjoy responsibly.
